What a fun week yhw children had in EYFS celebrating Lunar New Year! The children learned about special customs and created dragons, lanterns as well as painting numbers. Class 3 even wore some traditional customs and looked fantastic! Kung Hei Fat Choy!
Year 1 have been learning about trees this week. The children have enjoyed ordering them by size and drawing them with the correct labels. They are really proud of their artwork!
Year 2 have been learning about animals and their habitats, this week we have been exploring hot and cold deserts.
Year 3 have been learning all about farming. This week, they looked at arable farming and what conditions farmers need to grow good crops.
Year 5 have been learning about equivalent fractions and decimals in maths this week. They can now convert tenths and hundredths to decimals.
Year 6 have been on their 'Counter Traders Mission' this week. Learning about investments, trading, high risk portfolios and the factors that can affect the value of an investment. They have experienced both the highs and lows of trading and have shown a keen interest and aptitude for this field (although we don't think we would trust them with our pension fund just yet !!!)

Here are a few things we have been up to at Mendip Green this week…
This week in EYFS, the children have enjoyed creating their own abc patterns within the classroom and also outside. They have also been looking at the artist Georgia O'Keeffe and creating their own masterpieces. 🖌️ 🎨
The children have continued learning about birds in our Year 1 classes. Over the past week, they have learnt different art techniques to make feathers. They have used these feathers to make their own 3D birds.
Year 2 have been continuing to develop their observational drawing skills when focusing on still life compositions. They have created collages of their still life objects too.
Year 3 have been exploring shadows in science. They used lots of different resources to explore how a shadow is formed. They wrote up their findings using key vocabulary.
It has been synoptic task central in Year 4! The children have shown off their knowledge in history, geography and religion by planning and writing their big writes for all 3 subjects. We have never seen such studious classrooms!
In Year 5, during DT, the children have chopped an onion and carrot using their knife safety skills. They were shown how to follow a recipe to make their own class bolognese. The children were very excited to have a taste. Judging scores varied but many found a new liking to the chunky onions surprisingly. The classrooms and corridors smelt amazing with many comments about the aroma.
Year 6 have been enjoying gymnastics this term. This week, they choreographed a range of balances, movements, jumps and throws!

It was a nail-biting event but they were cool as cucumbers 😎
They have been rewarded with stickers and a Freddo (the treat of choice for all spelling whizzes).
They had already beaten 180 children in their phase to reach the final.
The finalists took part in three rounds: individual spellings, word search and speed spelling. We could not believe how quick they were.
We are in awe of these finalists and how well they did. We are still not sure we can spell broccoli, committee or medicine without the help of autocorrect! 🤩
